Not only was the SLI founded to enhance the leadership quality of student participants but also to better prepare them for professional and civic responsibilities. Students are provided information and tools through many varying workshops and then challenged to put their knowledge to work through group and individual projects. The SLI offers an ardent experiential learning experience in the many facets of leadership. History The SLI founders had worked with student groups on a local
and state level and found many students had the potential to exceed
as leaders on their campuses and in their communities but were not being
provided the skills and training necessary to advance them to a higher
level. In 1994 the two founders developed an outline for a week -long
session and two shorter sessions devoted to leadership training for
community college students. Their proposal was reviewed, evaluated and
modified for several months. In 1995 they began their quest to secure
funding. After several years, they obtained a NC State Reserve Fund
Grant and the SLI had its first class in the summer of 1999. |

| At present the SLI is working with its next class and is currently funded through prorated fees from each of NC's 58 Community Colleges and additional registration fees for accepted students. Acceptance To be accepted in to the SLI, students must be enrolled in the NC Community College System and have at least one full year remaining as a student. Students are nominated by college administrators and then are screened by a selection committee. To be nominated, students must commit for one year and to arrange or facilitate 2-5 workshops on their campus or in their community. The SLI can only admit 30 students a year.
